Today I learnt that in late 19th century Britain there was a short-lived period of early organised athletics where professional runners engaged in well-attended and much-publicised races. This came before the years of amateurism and international competition. The record time for the mile was gradually reduced in this period towards the 4 minute mark. I myself managed to get my mile time down to 5 minutes exactly today and I cannot imagine running much faster - so much respect for these athletes!
