Today I learnt that after the 1990 World Cup Semi Final between England and West Germany Stuart Pearce, who missed a penalty in the shoot-out, and Peter Shilton were called in for a mandatory random drugs test and sat waiting with the 2 players called from the German team. If someone had come in to that room then they wouldn't have known who won or lost because the Germans' conduct around the English duo was exemplary and politely subdued despite their victory. This taught Stuart an important lesson which was to always conduct yourself the same in victory or defeat and be good winner as well as a good loser and have respect for your opponents.

Today I learnt that at the end of another brutal round in the epic 1975 "Thriller in Manila" clash between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, Frazier's trainer uttered these immortal words. "Sit down son, it's all over. But nobody will ever forget what you did here today." The fight was thus ended after 14 rounds.

Today I learnt that conjoined twins acquired the name "Siamese twins" after a famous pair from Siam (now Thailand) who travelled to America and adopted the surname Bunker. They eventually settled down in North Carolina with their wives, (2 sisters) and had 10 and 11 children respectively.

Today I learnt that in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics Tanzania's Stephen Akhwari completed the marathon, long after its conclusion, in last place despite cutting and dislocating his knee at the start. When asked why he continued running, he said simply, "My country did not send me to Mexico City to start the race. They sent me to finish."
