Today I learnt that in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics Tanzania's Stephen Akhwari completed the marathon, long after its conclusion, in last place despite cutting and dislocating his knee at the start. When asked why he continued running, he said simply, "My country did not send me to Mexico City to start the race. They sent me to finish."
