Today I learnt that the prefix "sub" can be placed before a thing to indicate a lesser, lower in worth, substandard version of said thing. The expression is frequently used by critic Mark Kermode in his film reviews in which he may say, "this film displays distinct sub-Kubrick elements" or "this storyline is has no originality, it is just another bad, sub-Exorcist plot".
