Today I learnt that the Yongle Encyclopedia, written in early 15th century China, was the largest encyclopedia ever produced - with over 11,000 volumes. It was finally overtaken in size by Wikipedia. Nothing of the original has survived to this day and only a few hundred volumes of copies exist now.
